Oriental rugs are very special rugs made from some of the finest wool or cotton materials in the world. But if you want to protect your oriental rug and the flooring underneath, then it is best to put a rug pad in between them. When you think about all the rubbing between the Oriental Rug fabric and floor material over time, both can get worn out if something isn’t done to protect them.

Rug padding is the perfect solution. It is made to prevent any friction between the rug and floor. Only the best quality natural fibers should be used for your oriental rug padding. Try to avoid the cheaper rug pads made from recycled plastic. These pads often contain a synthetic glue or adhesive material which allows the pads to stick to the floor and rug. This is supposed to keep the rug stable so that it doesn’t move around too loosely underneath people’s feet.
While this may sound good thing, it is not so great for the rug and floor. Cheap plastic adhesive pads will end up damaging your oriental rug and stripping your floor. Then you’ll need to spend a lot of money restoring your antique rug and redoing your flooring. It is better to choose a rug material that eliminates adhesives and is softer on the surface of your floor.
For an oriental rug, you should choose either a rubber pad or a felt pad. Both are synthetic materials that are are specially formulated to preserve your Oriental Rug fabric and the flooring underneath it. The felt pad comprises several recycled rug fibers, while the rubber pad is 100% synthetic rubber. It is okay to walk on Oriental Rugs, but only if it has the protection of a Rug Pad underneath it. These pads make it more comfortable to walk on these rugs.

Be careful when you order oriental rug pads online. There are a lot of bogus retailers who will sell pads with clay fillers in them. Clay fillers will leave grey marks and stains on your flooring and rug, so it is best to stay away from them. Only purchase 100% synthetic rubber or felt pads from a reputable rug pad dealer.
